Yesterday was training day. It was weird and felt all good and fluffy, which is a nice way of saying that it shed no light onto my role, other than what I already knew. I've lived with internationals for a year, I've been one myself. I'm not saying it was a waste of time, just not 5 hours worth, we did get a BBQ lunch for it though.
Other tidbits of info we picked up were about ho cash strapped the University is or was, the history of University Hall and that I have no authority to control drinking, from that I gather my role is rather passive. I'm down with that.
Internet was the real minefield, which they explained they wanted us to get it, as American students would expect it, but pretty much told us that, we'd need to jump through hoops to make it use the phone line provided and could face the prospect of paying the penalty for an early cancellation due to not being here 12 months. Right oh.
And while I'm facing the prospect of holding on tightly to my ankles I face the typical student dilemma that almost every student faces being that of the initial costs of living. I'm not too worried, but it just means being a bit patient and so forth. I'm facing a $400 bond, approaching week two of rent and being made to pay rent two weeks in advance will mean $520 worth of rent to catch up, then I have to buy a wireless router and get adsl put in, I'm not sure if there is much cost in that. (If anyone knows, leave a message) I'm looking at doing xnet as they don't require you to change your tolls, of which we are barred. All I can say is thank you course related costs. That $1000 really does bail out students.
I guess at the other end is that I'll stop paying rent two weeks before the end and I'll get $400 back (provided Baby Jesus doesn't mess with me)
P.S I have a phone, which means I can get hold of the outside world via dialup, oh and I can use it to talk too.
